At Pinc our team of dedicated, artisanal florists have a number of passions and find daily inspiration both in our city and in the beauty of nature on our doorstep. Flowers are our main passion, but the history of the city we live in, and the beauty of the region that surrounds us are major passions, too. We believe that by sharing a brief history of the city, not to mention of the flowers and scenic majesty of south Wales, that we can inspire others. Our florists are confident that they can provide bouquets and arrangements for any occasion.
Carmarthen (Welsh Caerfyrddin), which has a good claim to be the oldest town in Wales, is a thriving community of approximately 17,000 and is the county town of Carmarthenshire. It is situated on the banks of the River Tywi, around 8 mile north of its estuary in Carmarthen Bay. The old and new towns were amalgamated into one borough in 1546, and it was the most populous region in Wales during the 16th-18th centuries, but as the Industrial revolution got underway growth in the area stagnated when new settlements around the South Wales Coalfield attracted workers. It was an important site during Roman Britain, being the capital of the Demetae tribe and known as Moridunum (‘Sea Fort’) it was recorded by Ptolemy and in the Antonine Itinerary. According to some variants of the Arthurian legend, Merlin was born in a cave outside Carmarthen, and the town has certainly benefited from the infamy.
Aside from this fascinating history, Carmarthenshire is a beautiful county and, in some ways, a florists dream. In addition to numerous nature reserves in the region, The National Botanical Garden is located here. There are a number of diverse gardens all providing examples of different habitats and the flowers and species that thrive in each habitat. The Apothecary’s Garden is dedicated to medicinal plants and the adjoining Apothecary Hall shows how old chemist’s shops were full of medicines derived from plants. Flowers and plants produce an astounding number of chemicals to protect themselves from disease, fungi, insects and grazing animals and these chemicals can also affect the human body. Plants were the basis of all medicines for thousands of years, and even today almost 50% of medicines produced by the pharmaceutical industry are inspired by nature or derived directly from plants.
The Arboretum is designed to show that there are woodlands around the world that grow in the same climate as that found in Wales, from Chile to the northern coastal regions of the USA, from Tasmania to south western China and the Himalayas. The species on display are not expected to mature for a generation and will provide ample opportunity for future botanists and horticulturalists to study the similarities and differences in the varied tree, plant and flower species of the world. With over 6000 species of flowers and plants on display, not to mention the Bee Garden, which is home to over half a million honey bees, The National Botanical Garden are a valuable scientific resource and a perfect place to find inspiration.
To the south west of Carmarthen lies Cors Goch Nature Reserve, which is one of the last six raised bogs in Wales. With a depth of up to 5 metres of peat, the mire provides an uninterrupted environmental record in excess of 8000 years, and is home to plants such as Oblong-leafed sundew, Marsh Cinquefoil and Narrow Buckler-fern. Coed Wern Ddu is another local nature reserve which highlights the biodiversity of the area, and is a mixed deciduous and wet woodland habitat.
With such wonders of nature on our doorstep it is no wonder the artisanal florists at Pinc are confident that they can provide arrangements or bouquets for any occasion. With our same day delivery service our dedicated team of florists are also certain you will never be left in the lurch.
